Challenge and Solution
We host an SNS website, where our users can upload and share photos with their friends. Nowadays, the size of a photo taken with digital camera becomes larger and larger. It is very common that a normal photo is larger than 3M. But after it has been shrunk while exif info being extracted and compressed with a fixed width*height and a rational compression ratio, the average size of photos is just slightly larger than 100K.
Furthermore, normally users can not select and upload multi photos at a time. It is a really inconvenient for them to select their favorite photos and wait for a long time uploading them one by one. On the server side, a lot of bandwidth is consumed, as well as more CPU and memory usage while processing them, when user uploading raw photos.
So our developers began investigating into this issue. It may cost one developer more than one month of coding and debugging such an ActiveX plugin and about two months with successful deployment in our case as we do not have many experience on Windows SDK development.
